DAILY SCHEDULE:
Second Graders enjoy a "Literacy CAFE," as we explore the reading-writing connection by emphasizing Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expanding Vocabulary. Our "CAFE" serves a diet of the "DAILY FIVE¨ key literacy activities:
~ Reading to Self
~ Reading to Others
~ Using Reading
~ Working with Words
~ Writing
These five activities are interwoven throughout the school day - incorporated into our Math, Science/Health, and Social Studies activities -- and emphasized during our writing and reading workshop sessions to help us meet the curriculum goals of the "CCSS Common Core." We enjoy the support of Mrs.Muir (Title I Reading), Mrs. Babcock (Intervention), Ms. Hohner (speech-language), Mrs. Meyers (English Language Learning) and other support personnel both in our classroom and working with small groups to assist us with these goals during workshop periods throughout the day.
Our district is using a "Word Study" approach to working with words/spelling/phonics again this year. This is a hands-on approach where students learn to identify patterns within words that they can then apply when reading and writing. We also will continue to incorporate our "Phonics Dance" and multisensory activities from Orton-Gillingham during intervention and enrichment.
Intervention and Enrichment Blocks
The second grade classrooms coordinate intervention/enrichment blocks for reading and math. For language arts, the three second grade classrooms intermix for leveled word work/spelling instruction. This instruction takes place daily, for 30 minutes
Math intervention and enrichment groups are determined using post-assessment data from instructed units. Math groups meet for thirty minutes three days per week.
Our district has adopted the "Math in Focus" series
This program is modeled upon the "Singapore Approach," see here for more information: http://www.sde.com/singapore-math/what.asp
We will typically spent 90 minutes each day on math, and incorporate technology with the smartboard daily and chromebooks and/or netbooks weekly.
Science and Social Studies are also important areas of study in second grade. In second grade social studies, we will primarily focus on maps, comparing life in the past to the present, and economics. In science, we will focus our studies weather patterns, habitats, and force & motion. We will also continue to use the "Scholastic News" classroom magazine as a valuable resource for timely topic exploration throughout the year.
Encore Classes
Our students attend "encore" special classes in Art, Physical Education, and Music each week. These classes are on a three day rotation, and I note the class of the day on the weekly homework charts. Please note that all students are asked to have a paint shirt for art, and gym shoes for p.e. (both can be left at school). We will also have special classes in library skills (in addition to weekly library visits), and from our guidance counselor.
Behavior
We use a school-wide positive behavior interventions and support system (PBIS) to encourage and reinforce positive choices. We also will be learning about the PAX Good Behavior Game with more info to follow....
